To write “Elvis Through my Eyes: Why Elvis Left The Building,” Las Vegas author, lyricist and actress Heart Lanier Shapre’ interviewed Elvis Presley’s childhood acquaintance Jimmy Denson.
Excerpt from “Elvis Through My Eyes: Why Elvis Left the Building”
It was the eve of Christmas 1947 when Jimmy Denson first saw Elvis. He was sitting on a stair stoop like a frog. Jimmy was on his way to see his adult friend, Milo Solomito, when his mama asked him to take Christmas dinner over to the Presley’s and give it to Grandma Minnie at 562 Poplar. The large sack of food consisted of meatloaf a foot long and about eight inches wide, blackened tomatoes, mashed potatoes, green beans, slaw and, for desert, a blackberry cobbler. It was a feast that could have easily fed eight people but there were the four Presley’s.
Then on January 2, 1948, at Lauderdale and Jackson, Jimmy met Elvis again. He was about 200 feet down the driveway, crossing an empty dirt field where kids played football. The “Baby” was holding his mama’s hand and walking with a stiff walk and his arm stiffly swinging out at his side. They were followed by Jesse Lee Denson.
Jimmy’s impression at that point was that Elvis was a big boy with a mind of 6-year-old. By the time they reached the end of the building, Jimmy knew he had to become the young Elvis’ protector.
He hadn’t been around when the Presley’s had first moved there in September because he had been away attending high school in Virginia. When he became too homesick, he came home. In fact, the morning he first met the Presley’s was his own first morning to attend Humes High.
The “Baby” had been following Jimmy’s brother Jessee Lee in order to watch him play the guitar. It was soon after that Gladys Presley and Mrs. Denson began negotiating Jesse Lee into teaching Elvis the guitar.”
“Interesting, enjoyable, surprises, sooched, incredible read. I read the entire ELVIS THROUGH MY EYES in three sittings. This is the only book I know that spells in detail the hardships Elvis, his Mother and Father faced an also overcame the tragic stillborn twin brother of Elvis resulting in an over protective Mother who had to depend on her church (Reverend Denson and family) while his Father took solace in alcohol. Dedication brought him out of it. After reading this book, Elvis Presley was very successful in spite of all the obstacles.”
